All LICSA activities are staffed
by North American Hobie Class Association Division
12 volunteers. We race according to the United States Sailing Association
rules
and handicap numbers
for open class racing. Since the numbers were never intended for comparing
catamarans vastly different in design and performance, we try to race in
close handicap groups. We have found that this keeps the competition tight
and the sailing more fun. In addition, there
is one design racing whenever there are two or more of the same boats in
a race.
Many different makes and models of catamarans
sail with LICSA. These include: Darts 18, 20 and 6000, Hobies 14,
16, 17, 18 and 20, Nacras 5.0, 5.5Sl, 5.5Uni and 5.7, Prindles 16
and 19, Stiletto 23s, Supercats 15, 17, and 20 and Tornadoes, both standard
and modified (8.5 ft beam). All catamaran sailors, from beginners
to experts, are welcome so contact LICSA
if they would like to join.
LICSA volunteers host the Mid
Summer Classic Regatta and the Great
South Bay 60/60/120, both part of the Division 12 schedule
of sanctioned events. In addition, we schedule local
fleet races for both novice and advanced sailors. The novice events are
very popular activities. New skippers have an opportunity to race with
an advanced sailor who serves as the crew. The learning curve for all participants
is accelerated dramatically. Advanced racing includes around the buoys
as well as long and moderate distance races. Our Bridge n Back
races are very popular and usually have at least one leg that turns into
a seven mile drag race. Picnic sails to the
Atlantic Ocean by means of the Fire Island Inlet are also part of the program.
Many of our members host parties at their homes during the colder months
to help keep the fun factor high and the friendships long term. We end
each year with a celebration brunch during which season awards, both humorous
and competitive, are presented. The Ass Over Tea Kettle award is still
one of the favorites for audience and recipients alike.
