Fire
Island Inlet
Great South Bay, Long Island, New York
LICSA sailors race and pleasure sail from many locations on Long Island. These include the Great South Bay off of Heckscher State Park, the Atlantic Ocean by way of Fire Island Inlet, Meschutt Beach and Mattituck Beach, both located on Peconic Bay; and historic Sag Harbor, located on the far south fork of eastern Long Island.
Of all of the places we sail, Heckscher is one of the best. The park provides direct access to the open waters of the Great South Bay. Just back the car and trailer right up to the beach and unload. There is more than enough parking for the largest regatta and we even have a fresh water clean up station just a short drive from the beach. The wind is fairly steady and usually fills in from the southwest as a sea breeze in the early afternoon. On most days we have breezes in the 15+ mph range. When it blows over 15, the chop is real nasty and keeps things interesting. During the months of July and August, the eel grass is rather abundant and presents some minor problems with boards and rudders when sailing on the north side of the bay. All things considered, Heckscher is a great place to sail.
We also sail at Sag Harbor, Meschutt and Mattituck Beach, all located on Peconic Bay. The water is deep and clean and the winds are predictable. Shelter Island is also an exciting place to sail offering one great race a year of moderate distance, about 25 miles. Depending on the conditions, Shelter Island can be circumnavigated in under 2 hours. When it blows for this race it is a real rip! In addition to all of the locations mentioned, many of our members travel to away events along the east coast.
LICSA is looking for a permanent home location with overnight storage facilities for our fleet. This would increase membership and allow us to further develop our program. We will keep you posted.
